Winning is everything
December 16th, 2007 by WalmikYesterday Banda took Rigved to her office as she had enrolled for a employee’s children contest for Making best out of waste. There were some other contests as well and there were really small babies enrolled along with 12 to 13 year old kids. The babies had taken part in fancy dress competition and they just there and swayed back n forth to the music.
Anyway, so Rigved had taken part in Make Best out of Waste! When he was told about this a few days before the contest, he instantly dragged me to his granny’s house to get a big thermacol mould that had come along with her new washing machine. He had something in mind and began work almost instantly. The thermacol mould had a cavity, so when he inverted it, there was a neat shape protruding from it. He colored it and made a brilliant fort out of it, with water all around so that enemies have a tough time capturing it. Me and Banda chipped in too but very little… most of the battle was fought by Riggy Boy.
Till the day of the contest we kept imbibing in him that winning isn’t everything, its the efforts that we put in and what we create ultimately is what is important and he seemed to agree with that but on the day of the contest when he submitted his creation, he became impatient and said to Banda that he really wanted to win as he had never won anything till now(that can be attributed to the fact that he had never participated in anything like this before this day). So when the names were being announced, as usual they started with the third place, second place and then the anticipation build up for the winner. The MC finally announced the winner and no prizes for guessing this one, it was Rigved!
The rest of the children had created things like a pen holder or a dummy fish tank etc. But Rigved’s fort was huge and impressive and did the trick. I had a tear in my eye when Banda told me how happy he was. I felt that my little boy is out there in the world and he is born to floor everybody.
Apparently the judges were pretty impressed by the way he explained what he had created on stage without feeling any stage fear(this can be attributed to the fact that in their school there are just too many occasions where children are made to go on stage). Anyway, later when he came back and seemed so pleased with the day that had just gone by, it made me feel maybe winning isn’t supposed to be everything but whatever it is… it is definitely SOMETHING!
